Mevante Umbria: Authentic Elegance Through Wine, Cuisine, Design, and Landscape

Discovering Mevante in the Heart of Umbria

In the green heart of Umbria, there are places capable of telling the story of a territory far beyond what is found in a wine glass. Places where wine becomes culture, hospitality, gastronomy, and beauty. Mevante Umbria is one of those places.

Nestled among the rolling hills of Bevagna, Agricola Mevante represents one of the most compelling expressions of contemporary Umbrian wine tourism. Just minutes from one of Italy’s most charming villages, it offers an experience that captivates wine enthusiasts, gourmet travelers, design lovers, and anyone seeking to discover the most authentic side of Umbria.

A Name Rooted in History

To understand the identity of Mevante, one must begin with its name.

“Mevante” is derived from the combination of Mevania, the ancient Roman name for present-day Bevagna, and Levante, the eastern exposure of the vineyards toward the rising sun.

The name perfectly reflects the deep connection between the winery and the land that surrounds it.

The estate is led by siblings Antonella and Paolo Presciutti, Roman entrepreneurs of Umbrian origin who chose to invest in the land of their roots, transforming a passion into a project defined by quality and vision.

The property extends across approximately 25 acres (10 hectares) of vineyards planted in a single east-facing block. This privileged position allows the vines to benefit from morning sunlight and from the unique soil and climatic conditions that have made this area renowned within the international wine world.

In the Kingdom of Sagrantino

A visit to Mevante means entering the heart of the Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG denomination, one of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions.

The undisputed protagonist is Sagrantino, the native grape variety that has helped place Umbria on the global wine map through its remarkable tannic structure, aromatic complexity, and extraordinary aging potential.

Alongside it are Montefalco Rosso DOC, Grechetto, and Trebbiano Spoletino, varieties that express the biodiversity and agricultural richness of the Umbrian landscape.

Annual production reaches approximately 60,000 bottles, allowing the winery to maintain a strong focus on quality, vineyard care, and the territorial identity of every label.

A Winery Where Time Is an Ingredient

One of the most fascinating aspects of Mevante is its production philosophy.

The winery was designed to utilize gravity during certain stages of vinification. This technical choice minimizes mechanical intervention and helps preserve the wine’s aromatic integrity.

Descending into the underground aging cellars, visitors immediately sense a unique atmosphere. Silence, naturally constant temperatures, the scent of wood, and soft lighting transform these spaces into almost contemplative environments.

Here, time becomes an essential ingredient.

Alongside traditional oak barrels used for long aging periods, amphorae also play a role. They reflect a continual search for new expressions while maintaining a dialogue with some of the oldest winemaking traditions in history.

Tradition and innovation coexist in perfect balance.

The Montefalco Sagrantino undergoes an extended maturation process before reaching the glass, developing complexity, depth, and elegance while never losing its authentic connection to the territory.

Tasting the Landscape

At Mevante, wine is not simply tasted.

It is experienced.

Large windows open onto the Umbrian countryside, drawing the eye toward Bevagna, Assisi, Spello, and the silhouette of Monte Subasio.

Every glass seems to narrate the landscape beyond it.

It is an experience that helps visitors truly understand the concept of terroir. Wine becomes the expression of a place, an agricultural history, and a culture rooted in centuries of tradition.

Chef Luca Presciutti and Contemporary Umbrian Cuisine

The experience naturally continues at the table.

Leading the restaurant is Chef Luca Presciutti, whose cuisine interprets Umbrian traditions through a contemporary lens.

Local ingredients form the foundation of every dish. Seasonal products guide the menu and are elevated through modern techniques that respect their original identity and flavor.

Memory and innovation coexist on every plate.

The cuisine does not seek theatrical effects. Instead, it pursues authenticity, balance, and depth of flavor.

While remaining profoundly Umbrian in spirit, the culinary narrative also reflects the personal and cultural journey of the Presciutti family, whose story bridges Rome and the hills of Bevagna. This subtle influence enriches the experience without ever overshadowing the territory itself.

The wines of the estate complete the experience, creating a continuous dialogue between cuisine and landscape.

Design, Art, and Hospitality

What distinguishes Mevante from many wineries is its ability to integrate wine, art, design, and hospitality.

Elegant furnishings by Domiziani help define refined contemporary spaces where every element interacts harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. Expansive glass walls, natural light, and careful attention to detail create an atmosphere of serenity and well-being.

Nothing feels accidental.

Every environment seems designed to encourage guests to slow down, observe, and experience the territory through a different perspective.

In recent years, Mevante has expanded its offerings by hosting events that bring together wine, culture, performance, and gastronomy. Theater productions, cultural gatherings, and community events reinforce its role as a place of encounter and shared experiences.

Bevagna: One of Umbria’s Hidden Treasures

Visiting Mevante also means discovering Bevagna.

Recognized among Italy’s most beautiful villages, this extraordinary medieval town preserves the charm of its ancient history.

The former Roman settlement of Mevania welcomes visitors with cobblestone streets, Romanesque churches, artisan workshops, and one of the most beautiful squares in Italy: Piazza Silvestri, a true medieval masterpiece.

Each year, the celebrated Mercato delle Gaite transforms Bevagna into a living time machine, offering one of Europe’s most respected historical reenactments.

The village’s strategic location also provides easy access to Montefalco, Assisi, Spello, and Trevi, making this corner of Umbria an ideal destination for travelers seeking culture, gastronomy, and landscape.

A Place That Leaves Its Mark

During my visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Antonella Presciutti and Chef Luca Presciutti, discovering a place where passion, professionalism, and hospitality coexist in perfect balance.

What impresses most is not only the quality of the wines, the sophistication of the cuisine, or the beauty of the surroundings.

It is the human atmosphere.

That rare feeling of being welcomed and guided through a journey that goes beyond tasting and becomes an experience.

As I left Mevante, with my gaze still fixed on the vineyards and hills surrounding Bevagna, I was certain I had encountered one of the places that best represents contemporary Umbria: elegant yet authentic, refined yet sincere, deeply rooted in tradition while confidently looking toward the future.

One of those places you visit once and that continues to call you back long after you return home.

A place where, inevitably, I left a piece of my heart.
