The announcement, confirmed during a ceremony at Rome Fiumicino Airport, signals the airline’s full integration into the alliance as of April 1. With this move, ITA Airways becomes the 26th member of Star Alliance, connecting its Rome and Milan hubs to a global network of more than 1,150 destinations across 190 countries.

The integration represents more than a symbolic milestone. It positions ITA Airways within a powerful ecosystem of global carriers, enabling seamless travel experiences through coordinated services such as through check-in, shared loyalty programs, and access to Star Alliance lounges worldwide.

For travelers, this translates into smoother connections and expanded route options. For Italy, it reinforces the country’s role as a key gateway between Europe and international markets.

Theo Panagiotoulias, CEO of Star Alliance, emphasized the broader impact, noting that ITA Airways’ addition enhances connectivity while elevating the overall customer experience across member airlines.

Lufthansa Group’s Influence and Integration Effort

The transition has been closely supported by Lufthansa Group, which holds a 41% stake in ITA Airways. The group played a central role in guiding the airline through the alliance integration process, aligning operations, services, and systems over several months.

This collaboration reflects a broader strategic alignment. ITA Airways is now part of Lufthansa Group’s expanding network of premium carriers, including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines.

The partnership strengthens multi-hub connectivity across Europe while offering passengers greater flexibility and access to coordinated services.

What It Means for Travelers

With the integration complete, ITA Airways customers now gain immediate access to Star Alliance benefits, including:

  • Reciprocal frequent flyer recognition and mileage earning
  • Priority services across member airlines
  • Access to an extensive global lounge network
  • Enhanced baggage tracking and travel coordination

Star Alliance Gold members will also be able to access ITA Airways lounges in Rome, Milan, and Catania, further reinforcing premium travel offerings.

Additionally, ITA Airways contributes more than 350 daily flights to the alliance, supported by a strong domestic and regional network that improves connectivity across Italy and Southern Europe.

For ITA Airways, the move signals a new phase of expansion. CEO Joerg Eberhart described the membership as a “historic milestone,” highlighting the airline’s ability to combine global standards with its distinctive Italian identity.

That positioning—blending efficiency with the cultural nuance of Italian hospitality—may prove key as the airline competes on an increasingly global stage.

A Broader Industry Context

Star Alliance, founded in 1997, remains the largest airline alliance worldwide, now offering more than 17,500 daily flights. The addition of ITA Airways further consolidates its reach, particularly in Southern Europe, a region with strong tourism demand and strategic importance for international travel flows.

At the same time, the move reflects ongoing consolidation within the aviation industry, where partnerships and alliances are essential for scale, efficiency, and customer retention.

Looking Ahead

As ITA Airways integrates more deeply into Star Alliance operations, the focus will likely shift toward optimizing routes, enhancing premium services, and strengthening Italy’s connectivity with key global markets.

For travelers—and for Italy’s broader tourism and business sectors—the partnership signals improved access, greater flexibility, and a more connected travel experience moving forward.
