Favorite Trattorias in Italy: Reader’s Choice

We asked you to name your favorite trattorias and you answered! You know…the ones you discover while wandering the back streets, and they’re known more by locals than tourists? Most of the time, trattoria refers to a casual eating establishment that is typically family-owned, and specializes in regional cuisine.

While you’re reading through the list or in Italy waiting for your meal, why not beat the heat with with either a Menabrea’s Bionda Lager or Ambrata Lager? As Italy’s oldest brewery, Menabrea is world-renowned for beer of the highest quality and tradition. One of their trademarks ingredients is pure water from the Alps that, because of its ideal position, flows naturally to the brewery.

Trattoria “Da Sandrino” (Sorana) by @casa.castagna

You won’t find a website, but Trattoria Da Sandrino is on social media and has received 569 great reviews on Tripadvisor! Live in Italy Magazine’s Facebook follower, Michelle of Casa Castagna wrote: “Diners come from far and wide to sample the cinghiale, pappardelle con lepre, and local speciality, Fagiola di Sorana. It’s such a well-kept secret it’s rare to find a foreigner, but Attilo the owner, greets everyone like family! Everything is prepared fresh from locally sourced ingredients and we have never had a poor meal here. We feel incredibly lucky to have stumbled across it and it is always full – even in the middle of the week in the middle of winter!”

Trattoria Pane e Panelle (Bologna) by @coldpastaredwine

On a recent trip to Italy, our travel editor Christine visited Pane e Panelle. It has been described as an idyllic setting where tourists meet locals. Luca Giovanni Pappalardo, a humanist chef, found a home at Pane e Panelle. He’s developed a unique method of researching and processing the raw material: the fish arrive whole directly from the fishing boats and are processed in the kitchen of the restaurant, as it used to be in the tuna fisheries.
