On March 11, 2025, the Gavi World Tour made its vibrant Miami debut at Briza on the Bay, introducing wine professionals and select guests to the elegance and character of Gavi DOCG. This large-scale tasting, hosted by the Consorzio Tutela del Gavi, showcased over 40 labels from the 2023 vintage—marking an exciting moment for both Miami’s wine scene and the growing U.S. audience for Italian whites.

A Growing City Meets a Long-Respected Wine

Hosting the event in Miami underscores the city’s rise as a cultural and luxury capital. Fueled by continued migration from the Northeast, booming real estate, and a thriving culinary landscape, Miami is quickly becoming a vital hub for international wine events. The Gavi World Tour’s arrival here reflects the demand for wines that speak to both refinement and approachability—qualities Gavi DOCG delivers with ease.

Masterclass with Jeff Porter: Understanding Gavi DOCG

Renowned sommelier and educator Jeff Porter led a compelling Masterclass that explored what sets Gavi DOCG apart from other Italian white wines. Made entirely from the Cortese grape, Gavi offers a fresh, mineral-driven style that stands in elegant contrast to Piemonte’s better-known reds like Barolo and Barbaresco, the so-called king and queen of Italian wines.

Wines Tasted: Gavi DOCG 2023 Vintage Highlights

During the walk-around tasting, guests sampled a wide range of Gavi expressions, including:

  • Tenuta La Marchesa Gavi DOCG 2023
  • Villa Sparina Gavi del Comune di Gavi DOCG 2023
  • La Raia Gavi DOCG 2023
  • Broglia Gavi di Gavi DOCG 2023
  • Produttori del Gavi Gavi DOCG 2023
  • Castellari Bergaglio Rolona Gavi DOCG 2023
  • Il Poggio Gavi DOCG 2023
  • La Zerba Gavi di Gavi DOCG 2023
  • Bersano Gavi DOCG 2023
  • Stefano Massone Masera Gavi DOCG 2023

Each wine offered a unique snapshot of the region’s terroir, from crisp and citrusy to more floral and mineral expressions.

A Journey Through the Hills of Gavi

Located in southeastern Piemonte near the Ligurian border, the Gavi DOCG zone includes 11 municipalities in the province of Alessandria. The area’s rolling hills, cooled by Apennine breezes and kissed by Ligurian sea winds, create an ideal microclimate for the Cortese grape. These elements shape Gavi’s signature freshness, minerality, and subtle floral aromas.

The soils—ranging from iron-rich red clays to tuffaceous white marls—further enhance Gavi’s complexity. The result is a white wine that can be enjoyed young or aged, still or sparkling, and paired with a wide variety of dishes.

Food Pairings and Travel Tips

Gavi DOCG pairs effortlessly with seafood, fried dishes, soft cheeses, and vegetable-based cuisine—making it a natural fit for Miami’s coastal fare. For more adventurous pairings, aged Gavi (Riserva) complements stuffed pastas, roast meats, and regional specialties from both Liguria and Piemonte.

For travelers seeking authentic Italian experiences, visiting the Gavi region is a must. From tasting Cortese at its source to exploring the Roman ruins of Libarna or the iconic Fort of Gavi, the region offers a blend of wine, history, and nature. As we like to say—it’s travel in a glass, until you can get there in person.
