To mark the NIAF 50th anniversary, members of the National Italian American Foundation Board of Directors traveled to Rome. On June 4, 2025, they were received by both Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican and President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale Palace. These back-to-back meetings represented a remarkable day of diplomacy and recognition.
A Historic Meeting with Pope Leo XIV
The day began at the Vatican, where the NIAF delegation met with Pope Leo XIV. This marked the first time an Italian American organization received a private audience with the Pope. It was also historic because Pope Leo XIV is the first Italian American to serve as Pontiff.

During the meeting, Pope Leo XIV confirmed his Sicilian heritage to NIAF Chairman John Calvelli. He spoke about the role of Catholicism in the lives of Italian American immigrants. He also acknowledged the importance of preserving faith and tradition across generations.
“This moment is deeply humbling,” said Calvelli. “It reflects how far our community has come—from immigrants to global leaders.”
Recognition from Italy’s President

Later that same day, the delegation was welcomed at the Quirinale Palace by President Sergio Mattarella. The reception honored the Foundation’s 50 years of leadership and cultural exchange.
President Mattarella praised NIAF for strengthening the bond between Italy and the United States. He called Italian Americans “a precious piece of the rich social mosaic” of American society.
He also emphasized shared values such as freedom, democracy, and human rights. These principles, he said, remain central to the relationship between Italy and the U.S.
The Dea Roma Award Presentation
During the visit, NIAF leaders presented President Mattarella with the Dea Roma award. The sculpture, created by Roman artist Dante Mortet, symbolized friendship between the two nations.
President Mattarella graciously accepted the award on behalf of the Italian Republic. He thanked NIAF for its continued support of Italian heritage and dialogue between communities.
NIAF’s Role on the Global Stage
“This day reflects the extraordinary trust Italy places in NIAF,” said Calvelli. “We are proud to represent our community at the highest levels.”

NIAF President and CEO Robert Allegrini added, “Our meeting with the Pope and the President affirms NIAF’s role as a global voice for Italian Americans.”
President Mattarella closed with a hopeful message. He expressed confidence that NIAF would continue serving as a bridge for future generations—both Italian Americans and young Italians building lives in the United States.
