Masciarelli Winery Tasting Lunch at Ferraro Kitchen: A Story of Strength and Resilience

On February 25, I attended a special tasting lunch at Ferraro Kitchen in Miami, hosted by IEEM, featuring Miriam Lee and Chiara Masciarelli of Masciarelli Tenute Agricole. Over a beautifully curated wine pairing menu, Miriam Lee spoke about family, tradition, sustainability, and the challenges of carrying forward a legacy.

Masciarelli represents more than wine. It tells a story of perseverance, evolution, and a deep respect for the land—a philosophy that resonates deeply as we celebrate Festa della Donna and this month’s theme in Live in Italy Magazine.

A Legacy of Strength: Marina Cvetić and the Next Generation

Masciarelli is one of the most recognized names in Abruzzo wines. Gianni Masciarelli started the winery in the late 1970s, introducing techniques that reshaped the region’s reputation. His work helped Montepulciano d’Abruzzo gain worldwide recognition, proving that Abruzzo’s wines could compete on an international level.

When Gianni passed away suddenly in 2008, his wife, Marina Cvetić, took over. Stepping into a leadership role she never expected, she carried the winery forward with unwavering dedication. Her work not only preserved Gianni’s vision but also propelled Masciarelli into new global markets.

Today, her daughters, Miriam Lee (35) and Chiara (23), continue this legacy. Miriam, the eldest, has worked at the winery since she was 18, taking on responsibilities early. Chiara, who joined more recently, brings fresh energy and a strong connection to the winery’s evolving future.

Sitting with Miriam, I saw how deeply she understands the balance between honoring tradition and embracing innovation. She spoke with the confidence of someone who has learned firsthand that success—both in wine and in life—requires patience.

“If the vintage is not good, we don’t produce at all.”

She shared this belief in a Vintus podcast interview, and it highlights Masciarelli’s unwavering commitment to quality. It also speaks of resilience—the understanding that sometimes stepping back and waiting is the key to moving forward.

A Personal Conversation with Miriam Lee Masciarelli

Miriam and I talked about women in wine, leadership, and the significance of Festa della Donna.

“When I first started working in wine, it was different,” she reflected. “Women were present, but they weren’t always visible.”

The industry has changed over time, with women now working as winemakers, sommeliers, journalists, and buyers. While progress didn’t happen overnight, she sees an undeniable shift. More than 60% of Masciarelli’s staff are women, though she is quick to point out that this was never intentional.

“My mother and I don’t hire women just because they are women. We hire the best people for the job,” she said. “That’s what real progress looks like.”

Still, she acknowledges an issue she has observed among many young women.

“They put limits on what they can do. Men don’t seem to do that. That’s what holds us back—not the industry, but our own mindset.”

For Festa della Donna, she takes a broader approach.

“For me, it’s every day. I was raised by strong women—my mother and grandmother. It’s about supporting each other all the time.”

A Tasting Experience Rooted in Terroir and Tradition

The lunch showcased Masciarelli’s commitment to craftsmanship through a three-wine tasting, each reflecting the unique terroirs of Abruzzo.

Marina Cvetić Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC Riserva 2022

This elegant white wine features aromas of golden apple, chamomile, and toasted almond. Aged on lees in French oak barriques, it offers a balanced acidity and a refined mineral finish.

Pairing: Burrata and Prosciutto.

Villa Gemma Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC Superiore 2023

A vibrant, cherry-hued rosato with notes of wild strawberries, pomegranate, and citrus zest. The Montepulciano grapes undergo a short maceration, creating a fresh yet structured wine with a crisp, mouthwatering finish.

Pairing: Chitarra al Pomodoro.

Marina Cvetić Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC Riserva San Martino Rosso 2020

A bold and elegant red wine, with deep notes of black cherry, plum, tobacco, and dark chocolate. Aged for 12–18 months in barriques, it embodies the richness of Abruzzo’s terroir.

Pairing: Braised Beef Rib and Mashed Potatoes.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Masciarelli’s sustainability efforts extend far beyond its vineyards. The winery follows certified environmental practices, ensuring that every aspect of its operations—including wine production, olive groves, and hospitality at Castello di Semivicoli—contributes to sustainability.

Their goal is to reduce emissions and move toward Net Zero operations, embracing a holistic approach where sustainability is embedded into the entire Masciarelli experience.

Masciarelli is more than a winery—it’s an invitation to experience Abruzzo’s landscapes, culture, and traditions.

Spanning all four provinces—Chieti, Pescara, Teramo, and L’Aquila—the winery allows visitors to explore Abruzzo’s diverse terroirs. The region itself is a land of contrasts, where the dramatic Apennine Mountains meet the tranquil Adriatic coastline.

For those seeking an immersive experience, Castello di Semivicoli, a beautifully restored 17th-century wine resort, offers an opportunity to slow down and connect with Abruzzo’s rhythm. Guests can enjoy private tastings, explore vineyard-covered hills, and take part in cultural events celebrating the region’s rich history.

Abruzzo is also home to three national parks, making it one of Italy’s most ecologically preserved regions. Travelers can hike through lush nature reserves, discover medieval villages, and unwind by the sea—all in a single day.

A Future Built on Resilience

Chiara and Miriam Lee Masciarelli

Miriam Lee and Chiara are shaping Masciarelli’s future, carrying forward a legacy that blends tradition, innovation, and a deep respect for the land. Their mother, Marina, set the foundation, proving that success comes from passion, persistence, and a willingness to embrace challenges.

As I stepped away from our conversation, I reflected on how Masciarelli Tenute Agricole embodies more than just winemaking. It represents the unwavering dedication, passion, and adaptability that define not only this family but also the region of Abruzzo itself. Their story is one of love for the land, respect for tradition, and a fearless embrace of the future—a balance that makes Masciarelli one of Italy’s most inspiring wineries.
