Celebrating the Newest Vinitaly International Academy Italian Wine Ambassadors

A Global Achievement in Italian Wine Education

The Vinitaly International Academy (VIA) continues to expand its network of Italian wine professionals. On March 1–2, 2025, VIA certified nine new Italian Wine Ambassadors (IWA) and one Italian Wine Expert in New York City. Led by VIA Faculty Sarah Heller MW, this prestigious program is the gold standard in Italian wine education. It produces experts who champion Italian wine worldwide.

As Live in Italy Magazine, we congratulate the newest Vinitaly International Academy Italian Wine Ambassadors:

  • Natalie Volpe
  • Daisy Penzo
  • Tomohiro Sato
  • Jeremy Shaw
  • Anne B. Thomas
  • Lawrence Fridley
  • Jennifer Parisi
  • Gennaro Aliperti
  • Chelsey Bunner

Additionally, Scott Thomas, already a certified Italian Wine Ambassador, was officially recognized as an Italian Wine Expert.

This achievement marks a major milestone in their journey. As ambassadors of Italian wine, they will promote the country’s rich traditions, diverse regions, and exceptional wines.

A Unique Course for Industry Professionals

The Vinitaly International Academy (VIA) certification is one of the most comprehensive and challenging wine education programs. The standard course takes place over multiple days. It covers Italy’s 20 wine regions in depth, combining lectures, tastings, and a final exam.

However, the New York edition of the VIA course was more intensive. Hosted by Banville Wine Merchants, this version condensed lectures and guided tastings into one immersive day. On the second day, candidates completed a demanding 2.5-hour exam. This format allowed industry professionals to deepen their knowledge while balancing their work commitments.

At the pinning ceremony, where candidates officially received their VIA certification, Famiglia Cotarella presented an award to the top-performing student, Scott Thomas. The Italian wine producer supported this year’s course, reinforcing its commitment to wine education.

Special Recognition: Daisy Penzo of Tuscany Wines Import

Among the newest Italian Wine Ambassadors is Daisy Penzo, CEO and Founder of Tuscany Wines Import. Based in South Florida, like us at Live in Italy Magazine, she is committed to sharing Italy’s wine culture. Reflecting on her experience, she shared:

“Traveling to New York for the Italian Wine Ambassador exam was both an intense and rewarding experience. The rigorous nature of the exam challenged my knowledge and deepened my appreciation for Italy’s diverse wines and regions. Despite its difficulty, the journey was incredibly fulfilling, reaffirming my commitment to sharing the beauty and complexity of Italian wine with the world.”

We are excited to see her company grow and flourish in the years ahead. Her work will further connect wine lovers in Florida with exceptional Italian wines.

This year’s VIA certification course was hosted by Banville Wine Merchants, a company dedicated to supporting Italian wine professionals. Their commitment to education aligns with VIA’s mission. Lia Tolaini-Banville, Owner of Banville Wine Merchants, shared her thoughts:

“I am pleased that Banville Wine Merchants was able to host the VIA Italian Wine Ambassador course again this year, as it aligns perfectly with our commitment to supporting the next generation of Italian wine professionals. Last year my son Alex Banville earned his Italian Wine Ambassador Certification and being closely involved in this educational endeavor again this year underscores our family’s shared passion and dedication to promoting Italian wine knowledge and culture. We believe this educational initiative will inspire fresh perspectives while honoring the rich traditions that make Italian wine so remarkable.”

Banville Wine Merchants continues to elevate Italian wine knowledge. Their efforts help ensure that future professionals have the expertise and passion to sustain Italy’s winemaking legacy.

Growing the Italian Wine Community

The Vinitaly International Academy community continues to expand. More highly trained professionals join its ranks each year. VIA has over 1,400 candidates worldwide and has certified 147 Italian Wine Ambassadors in the United States. With this latest class of Ambassadors and Experts, the network of wine professionals, educators, and enthusiasts continues to strengthen.

Looking Ahead: Vinitaly 2025 and VIA Verona

This milestone also leads into upcoming events in the Italian wine world. As VIA celebrates its 10th anniversary, the flagship VIA Verona course will take place from March 27–31, 2025. Shortly after, Vinitaly 2025, the world’s leading wine and spirits exhibition, will be held in Verona from April 6–9, 2025.

Wine professionals, buyers, and enthusiasts attending Vinitaly can engage with wine2digital. This platform enhances professional development and connects the global wine community through insightful discussions, masterclasses, and industry events.
