Asiago PDO: A Celebration of Vicenza Tradition at Made in Malga

In the heart of the Venetian mountains, Asiago PDO is more than just a cheese; it’s a symbol of tradition and quality. Originating from the Asiago Plateau, its history dates back centuries, when local shepherds began turning sheep’s milk into the flavorful cheese called “Pegorin.” Over time, the production methods evolved, and the cheese spread far and wide, becoming one of Italy’s finest dairy products. But it’s not just about excellence: Asiago PDO represents an unbreakable bond with the land, its traditions, and mountain life. The unique “Made in Malga” setting celebrates this cheesemaking heritage, transforming Asiago, a small town in Vicenza province, into the epicentre of mountain cheese culture and products.

Made in Malga: A Festival of Mountain Flavors

Contrary to what one might think, Made in Malga isn’t just about promoting Asiago PDO. It’s a national showcase that brings together the best dairy producers nationwide. Over 100 exhibitors from the Alps and Apennines filled the streets of Asiago’s town centre, offering visitors the chance to discover a wide array of high-quality cheeses and products.

This year, the event exceeded all expectations, with more than 400,000 free tastings and the sale of over 45,000 kg of cheese. Enthusiasts, curious visitors, and industry professionals packed Asiago’s streets, eager not only to buy but to dive deeper into the world of cheese through guided tastings and learning sessions. The “Asiago Experience” area showcased Asiago PDO “Mountain Product,” while numerous workshops and masterclasses explored unique pairings with “extreme wines” from mountain regions.

An Experience of Flavors and Culture

But Made in Malga is more than just a market; it’s a true journey into mountain traditions. Visitors had the chance to join excursions to the plateau’s malghe (mountain dairies), attend artisanal workshops, and dive into the world of cheesemaking through the “Asiago Experience” space. It wasn’t just about cheese, though: the fourth edition of the Mountain Beer Festival, showcased the best mountain craft beers, offering guests a perfect blend of taste and craftsmanship.

Asiago PDO: A Heritage to Savor

Asiago PDO stands out for its versatility and quality. Available in both Fresh and Aged varieties, it caters to every cheese lover’s taste and preference. The Aged version, with its smooth, compact rind, offers a bold and rich flavor, perfect for those who enjoy stronger cheeses. On the other hand, Asiago PDO Fresh has a thin rind and soft texture, ideal for those who prefer a delicate and fresh taste.

Health and Wellbeing with Asiago PDO

Beyond its unique flavor, Asiago PDO offers numerous health benefits. Rich in vitamins A and E, beneficial fatty acids, and bioactive peptides, this cheese supports bone health, skin vitality, and cardiovascular function. It’s also suitable for lactose-intolerant individuals, thanks to its reduced lactose content in the aged varieties.

If you’re seeking a day immersed in nature’s flavors and happen to be visiting Veneto, don’t miss the chance to visit Asiago and discover the best of Asiago PDO and the finest mountain farm products.
