The Journey of Rediscovery: From Madrid to Rome

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, known for his intense and realistic depictions, painted “Ecce Homo” around 1605-1609. This period was pivotal in his career, characterized by powerful religious themes and innovative use of light and shadow. The painting depicts Pontius Pilate presenting a scourged Christ to the crowd. It exemplifies Caravaggio’s mastery of creating emotion and drama. The work was first part of the private collection of Phillip IV of Spain. This commission emphasized the deep historical ties between Italy and Spain in the art world.

Pulini’s Revelation: Identifying a Masterpiece

The painting’s journey back to prominence is a story of intrigue and expertise. Initially, experts attributed it to a follower of José de Ribera when it appeared at the Ansorena auction house in Madrid in April 2021. However, Italian art historian Massimo Pulini, renowned for his expertise, quickly identified the painting as a genuine Caravaggio. Pulini’s sharp eye and deep knowledge of Caravaggio’s style were instrumental in recognizing the true value of this artwork.

Restoration and Celebration: Preserving a Legacy

Pulini’s initial evaluation set off a chain of events that culminated in the painting’s withdrawal from the auction and its subsequent authentication by experts, including Claudio Falcucci, who used advanced scientific techniques to verify its origin. Andrea Cipriani led the restoration, meticulously preserving the original colors and contrasts, ensuring the painting fully restored its authenticity and magnificence.

Exploring Caravaggio’s Legacy: Insights and Reflections

This rediscovery and restoration are celebrated in the collaborative publication “Caravaggio: The Ecce Homo Unveiled,” featuring essays by prominent scholars such as Keith Christiansen, Gianni Papi, Giuseppe Porzio, and Maria Cristina Terzaghi. Their contributions provide deep insights into the painting’s stylistic, technical, and iconographic aspects, further cementing its place in Caravaggio’s oeuvre.
