Federdoc on Heritage, Education, and the Global Future of Italian PDO Wines

An Interview with Giangiacomo Gallarati Scotti Bonaldi, President of Federdoc

Following the success of Federdoc ’s Arte & Vino event at Lucid Art Gallery, where guests enjoyed Prosecco, live painting, and Federdoc’s educational booklets, Live in Italy Magazine continues the conversation by exploring the deeper mission behind Federdoc’s presence in Miami. A full recap of the Lucid event will be published in a separate article.

Federdoc’s presence in Miami during Art Week 2025 extended across the city. Over the course of the week, the organization partnered with nine contemporary art galleries—Mindy Solomon Gallery, La Cometa Gallery, KDR 305, Nina Johnson Gallery, David Castillo Gallery, Lucid Art Gallery, Nader Sculpture Park, Dimensions Variable, and LnS Gallery (Sergio Sentiula). Each location hosted tastings and displayed Federdoc’s educational booklets, introducing visitors to the meaning of PDO wines and the importance of origin. The initiative concluded with a convivial Truffle Aperitivo at the Tartuflanghe Loft in Wynwood, celebrating Italian excellence through wine, gastronomy, and cultural exchange.

To gain deeper insight into Federdoc’s mission and international outreach, we spoke with Giangiacomo Gallarati Scotti Bonaldi, President of Federdoc.

Q&A with Giangiacomo Gallarati Scotti Bonaldi

Federdoc has long emphasized education—from production rules to consumer protection. Why is this so central to your mission?

Gallarati Scotti Bonaldi: Wine education is fundamental because PDO wines provide consumers with guarantees—quality, authenticity, and connection to territory. Each designation follows strict production regulations that safeguard identity and tradition. Today’s audiences vary widely in knowledge and experience. Education helps everyone appreciate PDO wines consciously, giving meaning to what is in the glass.

Presenting PDO wines in Miami’s art galleries created a dialogue between wine and contemporary culture. What value do you see in this approach?

Wine and art share a universal language of creativity and cultural identity. Both express history, craftsmanship, and a sense of place. Introducing PDO wines within artistic environments allows visitors to engage with them emotionally and intellectually. Miami Art Week offered an ideal context—international, curious, and open to interdisciplinary exchange.

Miami continues to grow as a hub for Italian lifestyle and culture. How does Federdoc view the city’s role in promoting PDO wines?

Miami is an extraordinary crossroads of cultures, ideas, and perspectives. Its audience is receptive to authenticity and eager to learn about the stories behind Italian products. For Federdoc, Miami represents a long-term opportunity to build meaningful connections with consumers, institutions, and cultural partners. It is a natural environment for sharing the values contained within Italy’s wine heritage.

Sustainability has become essential in today’s wine landscape. How is Federdoc guiding Consortia toward environmentally and socially responsible innovation?

Sustainability is critical for the future of PDO wines. Federdoc supports Consortia in adopting sustainable practices aligned with European and national directives. Certification systems such as Equalitas help ensure environmental, economic, and social responsibility. Our commitment is to evolve responsibly while preserving the authenticity and identity that define PDO wines.

Thousands of visitors encountered Federdoc’s booklets and tastings across nine galleries. What did this multi-venue approach accomplish?

This approach allowed us to meet audiences in spaces already dedicated to discovery. Presenting tastings alongside educational materials empowered visitors to explore PDO wines at their own rhythm. It created moments of curiosity, learning, and cultural appreciation. The final gathering at Tartuflanghe Loft embodied the conviviality central to Italian culture and to our mission.

Looking Ahead

Federdoc’s Miami initiative reflects a wider commitment to cultural engagement, sustainability, and consumer education. By sharing Italy’s wine heritage through meaningful partnerships and creative formats, Federdoc continues to expand international awareness of PDO wines and the traditions they protect.
