Summer 2020 is about to slip through our fingers. The ongoing COVID-19 battle in the United States is making many of us feel robbed of our summer vacation. For this reason, we’re clinging to last year’s trip to Italy while waiting and hoping our situation will get better very soon. Can Americans travel to Italy? Here are the latest updates on non-essential travel to Italy.

Travel From the United States

Currently, Italy has a strict ban on “non-essential” travel from the US until at least September 7th. Essential travel includes work; study; medical reasons; family emergencies; or to return home or to a place of residence. Notably, US citizens who are permanent residents of Italy can travel, but proof of residency will need to be presented at the border. Even if you can prove that your trip is essential, you must self-isolate for 14 days.

Which Countries Can Travel to Italy?

Non-Essential travel to Italy is allowed from countries within the EU. Travelers from Canada, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, Uruguay and a few more have non-essential travel restrictions lifted. You can find a full list here.

COVID-19 Testing In Italy

If you need to take a COVID-19 test while visiting Italy, it is necessary to go to an authorized public or private laboratory with a prescription from a physician. The antibody test will cost approximately 15 Euros. In the event of a positive response to the blood test, a nasal swab test (oropharyngeal test) should be promptly carried out to determine if the infection is active or if there is risk of transmitted it to others. There is no charge for nasal swab test that is coordinated by the Italian National Health System (SSN.)
