What to Know Before Traveling
Here is the latest news in travel to Italy. As of October 7, 2020 the nationwide state of emergency has been extended until January 31, 2021. Changes to travel guidelines and mask wearing have been made due to an increase in the Coronavirus positivity rate over the past two months.
In addition, the Italian government has mandated that masks be worn outdoors at all times.
Children under six years old, people with certain disabilities that makes mask wearing detrimental to their health, or individuals exercising on their own outside, are exempt.
As a result, the fine for being without a mask in public places has been raised to 1000 euros.
Travel Updates
Travel to and from within the EU is still permitted for both essential and non-essential travel. A self-declaration form must be completed. For some countries, travelers must have a negative COVID-19 test result before entering the country that they are visiting.
Firstly, travelers from non-European countries restrictions vary depending on the country of origin. Currently, essential and non-essential travel is permitted with certain requirements including self-isolation from: Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, New Zealand, Rwanda, Rwanda, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, and Uruguay.
Secondly, travel to Italy from other countries is permitted only for essential travel. Note that these countries are banned from entering Italy: Armenia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, Kuwait, North Macedonia, Moldova, Oman, Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic.

Lastly, non-essential travel to and from Italy and most EU countries is still prohibited. Americans should check the US Embassy and Consulates in Italy website and Italian nationals returning to Italy, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for the full details.
